Ethiopian Coffee Growing Regions
Ethiopia's diverse growing regions produce specialty Arabica coffee with distinct flavor profiles. Yirgacheffe is renowned for floral and citrus notes at 1,700–2,200m elevation. Sidamo delivers stone fruit and chocolate characteristics. Guji offers complex, wine-like cups. Limu provides balanced, spicy profiles, and Harrar is famous for bold, blueberry-forward natural coffees.
Coffee Varieties & Processing
Ethiopian Heirloom Arabica Varieties
Ethiopia hosts the world's greatest genetic diversity of Arabica coffee, with thousands of indigenous cultivars known collectively as Ethiopian heirloom varieties. These ancient cultivars produce complex, nuanced flavors unavailable from any other origin.
Processing Methods
Washed processing produces clean, bright, and floral cup profiles. Natural processing yields fruity, full-bodied coffees with berry and wine-like characteristics. Honey processing balances sweetness and clarity between the two methods.
Grading & Quality Standards
The Ethiopian coffee grading system classifies beans from Grade 1 (0–3 defects per 300g, specialty quality) through Grade 5 (commercial grade). Grade 1 Ethiopian coffee scores 80+ on the SCA cupping scale and represents the highest quality available for export. The Ethiopian Commodity Exchange (ECX) ensures transparent and standardized trading.
Trade & Export Logistics
Ethiopian coffee export involves comprehensive documentation including Certificate of Origin, Phytosanitary Certificate, Bill of Lading, and ICO Certificate. Shipping timelines: Europe 3–4 weeks, USA 4–5 weeks, Asia 4–6 weeks. Minimum order: one 20-foot container (19,200 kg / 320 bags at 60 kg). Payment via wire transfer or Letter of Credit.
