How is Ethiopian coffee graded?
Ethiopian coffee is graded by physical defect count per 300g green sample, cross-referenced with a cupping score using SCA protocol. The system runs from Grade 1 (highest) to Grade 5 (minimum export standard).
The two grades relevant to specialty buyers are:
Grade 1: 0–3 defects per 300g. SCA cupping score 85 or above. The top specialty tier. Grade 1 Yirgacheffe and Guji naturals can reach 90+ points in exceptional harvests.
Grade 2: 4–12 defects per 300g. SCA cupping score 80–84. Also specialty grade. Grade 2 typically arrives to market earlier in the harvest cycle and sits at a lower price point than Grade 1 from the same origin, with slightly less complexity at the top end.
Defects fall into two categories. Category 1 defects include full black beans, sour beans, and foreign matter; each counts as one defect. Category 2 defects (broken beans, insect damage, quakers) require five affected beans to equal one defect. Grading is administered by the Ethiopian Commodity Exchange (ECX) and ECTA. How do you buy Ethiopian coffee beans wholesale?
The right sequence for wholesale Ethiopian coffee sourcing is sample first, container second. Committing to a container without cupping the specific lot is the most common and most costly sourcing mistake.
Here is the process step by step:
1. Identify a licensed exporter. Verify that the exporter holds ECTA export certification. This is a prerequisite for all official export documentation. Ask for the license number if it is not published on the exporter's site.
2. Request a sample with a cupping report. A credible exporter provides a Q-grader-scored cupping report with every sample, using SCA protocol. The report should state the origin, washing station, grade, processing method, harvest year, and cup score across the SCA attributes. If the exporter cannot provide this, move on.
3. Evaluate grade, traceability, and moisture content. Confirm the grade (Grade 1 or 2), the processing method, and whether traceability goes to washing station or farm level. Check moisture content: green coffee for export should be between 10% and 12%.
4. Confirm the documentation package. A full Ethiopian export includes: ECTA certification, phytosanitary certificate, and ICO certificate of origin. Your import authority may require additional documentation; confirm requirements before placing the order.
5. Agree on terms and volume. Ethiopian green coffee is typically sold FOB (Free on Board) from the port of Djibouti. When is Ethiopian coffee available for export?
New crop Ethiopian coffee becomes available for export from January or February, following the main harvest. Planning your buying window around this calendar is the most reliable way to secure the best selection.
The main harvest runs from October through January across Oromia and the southern regions: Yirgacheffe, Sidamo, Guji, Bench Maji, and West Arsi. Harrar, in the eastern highlands, runs slightly earlier, from September through December.
